Keru offers project-based experiential learning programs that expose students to critical issues of sustainability while developing leadership, professional skills and fostering unparalleled insight and empathy. Our incursions and excursion-based programs are designed to educate and inspire all involved.

Founded on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 17- Partnership for the Goals, Keru offers IB and CAS students practical and meaningful ways to be the change we need to see in the world.

We partner with schools and students to work towards each UN Sustainable Goal through high-quality CAS Trips, in-school programs, virtual learning and excursions. Students learn by engaging in real-world experiences, developing skills they’ll carry to university and beyond.

Keru offers 3, 5 and 7 day-long programs that integrated with International Schools’ demanding curriculum and work to grow students into future leaders.


IB CAS
Our sustainability-based programming uses the pedagogy of the IB CAS programs: Creativity, Action, ServiceWith project-learning based programs students are exposed and engaged with real-life problems, allowing them to pair the knowledge learned in class with real-world solutions on the topics of Public Health, Biodiversity, Culture, Media and Design, Waste Management, Education, Community Development and many more.


Workshops
Keru offers on-campus, off-campus & virtual workshops on a wide range of topics, including Arts, Marketing, Fundraising, Sustainability, Social Entrepreneurship, etc.

Workshops can be embedded into the Experiential Learning Trip for preprogram preparation or post-program follow-up.

We offer half-day, full day and multi-day workshops.
FIELD
CONSULTING PROGRAMS

Our programs give high-school students an opportunity to make real impact. In our short-term consulting engagements, student consultants work under the guidance of professional mentors to solve a pressing challenge facing our client. Through expert guidance, real world experience, and rigorous academic content, students are able to create a sustainable and practical solution for our local partners. Our programs are based in rural China and Southeast Asia, giving students first-hand understanding of the complex issues we work with our partners to solve. Our student consultants are equipped with relevant tools and knowledge to create solutions for global problems such as water safety, poverty, and public health.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Real service-learning, social responsibility mindset and aid for those in need!  In this fundraising program, participants will obtain hands-on knowledge on philanthropy projects of Keru partners and conduct a marketing campaign and help raise money for good causes. 
Keru has a wide network of social business and philanthropies, and we have helped them raise funding for their programs with underserved groups. 

Some of the most pressing issues of the modern society, such as migrant children education, emotional resilience of left behind children, elderly care etc., will become more evident and manageable after the students take a deep dive into learning the surrounding social issues and their after-effects from the inside and step in to help raise donations for the cause.

Students analyze the philanthropic model of a charity or NGO and design, plan and implement a fundraiser campaign to help raise money for their projects.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Learn first-hand about underserved groups in China 
• Understand philanthropy models in China and its challenges
• Prepare and conduct interviews to collect evidence from the local communities about their needs and problems
• Transfer social media skills into marketing fields by creating promotion materials with video, photo footage and practice storytelling 
• Learn the basics of fundraising strategies and methods for collection of funds for a philanthropic purpose
• Create analytical reports as a summary of the fundraiser

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Not every student in China has access to the education that can give them equal opportunities of growth and career. UN SDG #4 inspired us to connect the world class schools in China with the children who are affected by inequalities of modern society. Students will take a deep dive into learning the surrounding social issues and problematic effects of China’s Great Urban Migration and gain perspective from first-hand observations. 

Students be volunteer teachers, develop training curriculum and contribute to alleviating left behind or migrant children from poverty. This program will give the sense of importance of education and give students a chance to build lifelong friendships with children of a different income group.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Social entrepreneurship as a link between businesses and disadvantaged groups. In this program we are going to do a deep dive in selected social enterprises, investigate their business models and understand how they helps their target audience and how they can be improved. 

After conducting field research, students  will brainstorm solutions which will become part of their social entrepreneurship plan: in rural areas to train and retain young people, in migrant communities to provide better training, child support, elderly care, nutrition training etc. They will develop and present their own social enterprise business plans or charity models and present it to the panel of locals, business and charity leaders to assess and improve their proposals.

• Learn first-hand about social enterprise models and challenges
• Improve interview skills, field research and data analysis
• Investigate and research the business target audience, their challenges and needs
• Practice critical and creative thinking to match the discovered community issues with possible solutions in one of the fields: up-cycling, recycling, down-cycling, etc.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
The endangered species list grows longer each day, the rate of species loss is so high that experts suggest we are entering the sixth mass extinction event for the planet. In this program students explore the biodiversity of their city or province and find out which endangered species in their area need protection. 

Together with biodiversity experts, students will visit parks, forests, and national reserves to explore the local species, mark them in special software and produce a report about the species which require attention.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Define the components of ecosystem, learn about the ecosystem and biodiversity of their local environment
• Obtain applicable knowledge on ecosystem restoration and biodiversity preservation efforts
• Learn how to observe species in the wild nature and map them on special software and satellite maps 
• Identify the extent of species endangerment and propose actions to protect them
• Take steps to protect endangered species

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Food not only give us joy and nutrition, but food is also not created equal. Students take a deep dive into agriculture, food production and food value chain that allows them to discover the definition of “food mile” and why eating locally is preferred. 

By visiting sustainable farms and rooftop gardens, students will learn how local food sourcing reduces the distance and energy involved in the food cycle and allows for the sustainable development of local economies and the preservation of farmland. On top of that, students will also explore the product packaging process and how to make better informed decisions about which products to purchase based on its packaging.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Climate change is undeniably one of the biggest additions to our environment. It is our carbon footprint and energy production. Our current sources of energy such as fossil fuels and coal are finite and will eventually run out, not to mention cause irreparable environmental damage. 

In this program, students will explore renewable sources of energy such as sun, water and wind -which are plentiful and will run out in the near future. We will also investigate how we can mitigate the climate change effects which are currently happening. Furthermore, we will learn to develop ways on how to live more “green.”

Throughout this program, students will learn about the concept of carbon footprint and will develop a practical plan on how they can reduce their energy usage in their daily life and school.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
This program is focused on the 7 Principles of “Leave No Trace” (LNT). These principles are widely recognized and have been adapted so that they can be applied anywhere, from remote wilderness areas to local parks, and even to students’ own backyards. They will also  apply to almost every recreational activity. 

Students will learn the best practices to make their activities outdoors as safe for the environment as possible. As well as learning how to promote these sustainable practices with their peers, families, and communities so we can all start to leave nothing but footprints. During this program, students will do learning activities outdoors and indoors, go out to an eco-friendly hike and bring benefits to the community by popularizing the “Leave No Trace” lifestyle.

• Adapt to these principles for different circumstances and activities

14: Life Below Water
ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
What is a Mangrove Forest and why are coral reefs important is the ocean environment? The world’s oceans, their chemistry, temperature, currents and life, and drive global systems all make the Earth habitable for humankind. 

How we manage this vital resource is essential for humanity as a whole and to counterbalance the effects of climate change. In addition to understand the coral reef ecosystems, students will also learn the concept of abiotic and biotic factors crucial to reef health. 

Based on the research and multiple field visits, students will develop recommendations to create a sustainability plan for coral reefs. 
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Understand the importance of ocean life and ocean environment
• Learn about the basic components of a coral reef ecosystem with an emphasis on specific abiotic and biotic factors crucial to reef health and trophic level relationships among key organisms
• A Deep dive into the sustainability issues of the local communities that affect the ocean’s health

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
City-based Farming lowers carbon footprint, improves food security in the area and enables the use of land and resources more efficiently. Moreover, it can positively change public opinion towards agriculture and organic farming, which in turn will increase production and development in rural areas. 

Urban gardens, farms and permaculture offer city populations a chance to connect with their food, their land and reduce their carbon footprints. As many international cities develop green policies, learning to grow in urban cities is a vital skill for future leaders. 

After exploring permaculture gardens and farms, students will identify places suitable for city gardens in their communities and propose their urban design plans according to Permaculture Principles they have learned.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Learn the “12 Principles of Permaculture” and be able to identify them in nature, agriculture and urban environments
• Apply the Design Thinking skills to create green urban design solutions
• Design a permaculture project for urban environment

12: Responsible Consumption and Production
ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Move over fast fashion and single-use products and make way for up-cycled art! In this program, students will learn creative ways of dealing with things we no longer need. Ways to extend the life cycle of items and reduce waste. 

By experimenting with materials and its various forms, students will up-cycle old clothes into new designs, change the form of plastic garbage into decorations and even create furniture from chopsticks! 

Participants will also improve their project management skills by organizing an exhibition and fashion event for community members.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Fashion generates 4% of the world’s waste per year which is approximately 13 million tons. A typical consumer in Western countries throws away about 30kg per year, of which, 95% could be reused or recycled. Slow fashion is slowly taking over with sustainably produced clothes, up-cycled clothing and the resale economy. 
The slow fashion economy is predicted to be worth billions in the coming years. Up-cycling clothing is the method of taking old, worn out or damaged materials and transforming them into brand new pieces. 

In this program, students will learn more about sustainable fashion and will receive hands-on experience in developing up-cycled clothing and organizing a real fashion show.

6: Clean Water and Sanitation
ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Water is fundamental for the survival of humans, plants and animals. Even though most of Earth’s surface is covered by water, only 0.6% of that amount is available as fresh water. Conserving and responsibly using water is a critical issue of sustainability and ensuring continuing access to this scarce resource. 

In this program, students will learn about different sources of drinking water, water contaminants and methods of water purification. They will also receive hands-on experience in water testing and learn how to create a water filter which can be useful for outdoors and extreme situations.

• Understand the issues in water quality and the key contaminants of drinking water
• Learn about different water sources and the key issues of sustainability in water consumption 
• Gain a deep understanding of the sustainability challenges in the local communities

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Integrating students with different physical and mental abilities into sports can ensure healthy lives and promote well-being at all ages and conditions of children, which is essential for sustainable development. 

Participants in this program will learn about sports education, teamwork, and how to promote a positive environment with children who have disabilities. They will understand more about positive psychology, body positivity and inclusivity, mental health education and find creative ways to teach a chosen team sports game to differently-abled children.

• Understand sports education, improve teamwork and learn the basics of social interaction with disabled children

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
What happens to the things we throw away? In most cases, these things end up in a landfill even if they are thrown in the recycling bin. What are the processes of waste removal and how can they be made more sustainable? 

Students will investigate of the different types of waste on their campus. They will understand where it goes, quantify the amount, and develop innovative ideas on how to reduce the amount and improve the process of waste management. 

Students will also practice composting and choose the most suitable method for their school and propose a waste reduction solution on campus.

• Improve teamwork, project-management, research and communication skills while develop the final project on food sustainability campaign

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Over the last 70 years, China has faced an unseen scale of modernization and urbanization. Advanced infrastructure, breathtaking new architecture, blend of cultures from the whole world, booming contemporary arts scene and people of all backgrounds - the true country of the future. But what about the thousands of years of history? 

During this cultural immersion trip, students will explore the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of China to see how they have managed to preserve their history. As a result, students will transfer their discoveries into visual and auditory footage to pass the heritage of their city to the next generations. 

Explore how storytelling is an important way of passing down cultural traditions, history and binds communities together.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
• Learn about cultural preservation, sustainable development, history of the subject city and its contemporary and traditional arts
• Practice research, photography, filmography and sketch skills to document cultural and natural gems as well as modern galleries and their work
• Utilize communication and analytical skills to establish a clear picture of the cultural diversity inside China and challenges linked to its preservation and promotion

Students challenge their skills while learning about Model UN. While receiving the topics about global challenges, the students also practice various skills and build new friendships. The sessions help students to study the mechanisms of global cooperation and get a fairly rounded understanding of different world issues and country policies.

This study shows how local communities use design thinking for connecting, immersing, and eventually creating value, with the communities they work with. Students will receive case studies and provide solutions, while applying Design Thinking techniques

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
Students will learn how small communities benefit from different sources of revenue, and where that revenue goes. They will then identify a target market for a local area affected by the drop in international tourism and develop a low-cost/digital content marketing plan to invigorate domestic tourism to replace lost revenue from international visitors
