While the UN SDG framework exists as a guidepost, most grassroots organizations do not have quality information on the holistic issue they are tackling. This project aims to generate insights and highlight trends of importance on social issues by drawing from online and public data sources using big data and data analytical methods.

ABOUT THIS PROGRAM
The recent Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) epidemic in China and around the world demonstrated that the humanitarian costs of this outbreak has led to more than 40,000 people infected in China alone. Important measures such as public health policy and technological solutions both play an important role in order to stop the spread of an epidemic.

In this workshop, students will develop an understanding about how health policies and technological solutions could potentially prevent future outbreaks. This essay analyses the causes for the failure of the international response and proposes four measures to improve resilience, early detection and response to future outbreaks of infectious diseases.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
In today’s rapidly urbanizing China, the young generation often leave their hometown to seek opportunities in the city, which can provide them with an improvement in quality of life. However, this has major consequences on those who choose to stay in the rural villages, many of whom are older and possess less knowledge and fewer marketable skills.

In an effort to address this issue, Laojia has worked with some families in Laozhai to develop an organic rice program and are now looking to develop an education product to help the local people stabilize their income and bridge together people from cities to rural areas, with the mission to create meaningful experiences for both the villagers and travelers, all while trying to maintain the local culture and protect the natural environment.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM
In China, education is not free after 9th grade, leaving many thousands of families to face the reality that they, due to low income or extenuating circumstances, cannot afford to educate their children, thus limiting their future success. More than 40,000 students in Shanghai do not have the means to pay for high school or college. Shanghai Sunrise collects private donations from individuals and civic and corporate organizations to cover tuition expenses for carefully vetted students to ensure their success. Over the past 20 years, Shanghai Sunrise has contributed significantly to Shanghai education with scholarships for about 400 students per year, but would like to grow to support 500 students each year.

This year, in order to increase their impact and help more students, Shanghai Sunrise is looking to find more effective ways to raise social awareness as well as funds.

  • Students will present to the local partner an actionable fundraising plan as well as a campaign plan for an existing fundraising idea.

Shining Star is a grassroots NGO that provides mental health and enrichment programs for left behind students in Guangdong. Now in their third year of operation, they seek to develop fundraising channels in order to continuously provide high quality programs that benefit left behind children in the community. UN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
3: Good Health & Well-Being; 6:Clean Water & Sanitation
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
There's a big difference in quality of life and living conditions in cities compared to rural areas. When it comes to water, there's actually very little wastewater infrastructure in rural areas while the amount of wastewater produced in rural China is significant. It is said that more than 100 million rural Chinese drank polluted water in 2010. It's also reported that water pollution has been estimated to cost the Chinese economy 3.1 percent of GDP.

To tackle this problem, Siyuan wants to get to know a bit more about the wastewater management in general before they, together with Keru, go run a baseline survey about waste water management in the local area and find out a plan that works the best there.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
  • Students will gain insights into water basics and wastewater management worldwide
  • Students will present to the local partner a wastewater management research report that provides data support for the field research in 2020 summer
  • Students will improve their communication skills and teamwork ability throughout the program
