Siyuan Water was founded in 2014, by Yihong Lan, a finance professional who was inspired to start his venture following a transformative personal experience. The summer before he was supposed to matriculate at the Wharton School of Business, he joined a Wuhan University team to test water in rural areas of Yunnan and Guizhou. Of 50 water samples collected, only 3 met even the lowest safety standards set by the Chinese government. These stunning facts motivated Yihong to completely forgo his graduate studies in order to start Siyuan Water, a social enterprise with the bold vision of providing access to clean drinking water for every child in rural China. Siyuan's projects work through three avenues to achieve impact: (a) donation of water filters to schools as a point-of-consumption solution for water pollution; (b) collection and analysis of water quality data; and (c) water safety workshops to educate children, teachers and families about water safety.
